If your goal is to play college hockey it is important to play where the combination of hockey development and exposure is within an environment which allows for academic development and success.
How are you to know where your student athlete should play to have the greatest chance to satisfy these criteria?
The College Hockey Guide includes rosters of all NCAA 1, 2 and 3 teams. Each of the rosters includes pertinent information about all of the players who have successfully navigated the hockey development level and are playing at the college level. Each of these players found a way to develop their skills and get noticed. I think it is important for you to know how they succeeded so that you can plot your own course.
There are 1,551 players on NCAA Division 1 rosters, 202 players on NCAA Division 2 rosters and 1,978 players on Division 3 rosters for 2006/2007. How did they get there? Which programs provided the development and exposure?
Of the 3,731 players on NCAA roster for 2006/07 - 2,960, or about 80% last played in just ten leagues or levels.
These numbers are based on the roster information provided by the NCAA programs sponsoring ice hockey. This information has been verified but we still were unable to determine last team for 93 NCAA players.
The other part of this equation is the player population of each of these leagues or levels. Our data for overall player population is not as easy to verify.
Our best estimate of NEPSAC and other private school players in the United States is 10,000 (freshman through senior). Based on this estimate 8.57% of prep and private school players continue playing hockey at the NCAA level.
If there are 50,000 public high school players in the United States then about 0.6 % of public high school players continue playing hockey at the NCAA level.
At the junior level it is more reliable to determine how many players per year move on to NCAA hockey. The top leagues are:
NAHL – 110 players per year
USHL – 93 players per year
EJHL – 87 players per year
